Behaviour Consultation
Sometimes a behaviour keeps happening even when you have tried different strategies, or something that once worked no longer seems to help. Behaviour consultation provides an opportunity to look more closely at what may be happening and what your child may be communicating through their behaviour.
I work collaboratively with families to understand patterns, consider the situations surrounding the behaviour and develop practical strategies that fit your child, your family and everyday life.
When Consultation May Be Helpful
Behaviour consultation may be useful when a situation is affecting daily routines, relationships, participation or your child’s ability to feel successful and comfortable in everyday life.
Recurring Challenging Situations
When the same difficulties continue to happen and it is not clear what may be contributing to them.
Changes in Behaviour
When your child’s behaviour has changed and you would like help understanding what may be happening or what has changed around them.
Everyday Routines & Participation
When routines, transitions, school, family activities or community experiences are becoming difficult for your child or family.
Understanding What Behaviour Communicates
Looking beyond the behaviour itself to better understand needs, patterns, triggers and what your child may be trying to communicate.
What We May Work On
The focus of consultation depends on what is happening for your child and family. Rather than simply trying to stop a behaviour, we look at what may be contributing to it and what meaningful change would look like in everyday life.
Understanding Patterns
Looking at when and where challenges happen, what tends to happen before and after them, and what those patterns may tell us about your child’s needs.
Practical Strategies
Developing respectful, realistic strategies that can be used during everyday routines and situations without making family life feel more complicated.
Building Skills & Participation
Identifying skills that may help your child communicate, cope, participate and navigate challenging situations with greater confidence and independence.
What Consultation Can Look Like
Consultation is tailored to the situation. We may spend time talking through what you are seeing, gathering information about patterns and routines, observing your child when appropriate, and working together to identify practical next steps.
Understanding the Situation
We begin by listening to your concerns and looking at the broader picture, including your child’s strengths, routines, environment and the situations in which challenges are occurring.
Collaborative Planning
Together, we identify goals and strategies that feel meaningful for your child and realistic for the people who support them.
Review & Adjustment
As you begin using strategies, we can review what is working, what is not and what may need to change as your child’s needs and circumstances evolve.
Let’s Talk About What You’re Seeing
You do not need to have everything figured out before reaching out. An introductory conversation is a chance to talk about what has been happening, what you have already tried and what kind of support may be helpful for your child and family.
